Laboratories of molecular cytogenetics and cytogenomics
Laboratories of Molecular cytogenetics and cytogenomics were established in 1998 as part of the cooperation between the Faculty of Science of MU and the Department of Medical Genetics of the University Hospital in Brno. These are specialized laboratories with research, teaching and diagnostic activities, which bring together the cytogenetic laboratories of the Faculty of Science of MU (Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology of the Medical University of Brno) and the cytogenetic laboratories of the Cytogenomics Section of the CMBG IHOK of the University Hospital in Brno.
We are focused on research
The main focus of these laboratories is research of human genome instability at the level of structural and numerical changes of chromosomes using molecular cytogenetic or cytogenomic methods. The obtained findings have important applications in clinical medicine, they serve to reveal the causes of some genetically determined congenital diseases or to characterize the biological properties of malignant tumors.
The research activities of our laboratories are focused on the study of chromosomal aberrations using metaphase and interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques, MLPA techniques and array-CGH, optical genome mapping and next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. In cooperation with the Institute of Medical Genetics of the Brno University Hospital and a number of other medical departments, we participate in the rapid introduction of specialized molecular cytogenetic examinations into clinical practice. We cooperate closely with other cytogenetic laboratories of the Cytogenomics Section of the CMBG IHOK FN Brno, where molecular cytogenetic and cytogenomic analyses are performed for the needs of prenatal genetic diagnostics, postnatal cytogenetics and oncocytogenetics.
OUR RESEARCH GRANTS AND PROJECTS
We provide theoretical and practical teaching
The laboratories provide regular theoretical and practical cytogenetics sessions to students of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Brno within the framework of accredited bachelor, master and doctoral programs, including supervision of bachelor, diploma and doctoral theses.
